Hon. Akande Leads Charge Against River Blindness and Lymphatic Filariasis in Ibadan South West

Ibadan South West Local Government Launches Free Distribution of Mectizan and Albendazole to Combat River Blindness and Lymphatic Filariasis
Hon. Kehinde Adeyemi Akande, Executive Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government, has flagged off the distribution of Mectizan and albendazole to prevent and treat river blindness and lymphatic filariasis in the council area.

River blindness, also known as onchocerciasis, is a cause of blindness transmitted through black fly bites ¹. Lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, causes swelling in the limbs and genitals, spread by mosquitoes.

Hon. Akande emphasized the importance of cooperation from residents, urging them to work with health workers administering the drugs. He also appreciated the State and Federal Governments for including Ibadan South West Local Government in this program.

According to Dr. Mrs. Adeoye from the Ministry of Health, Mectizan and albendazole have shown significant success in eliminating river blindness and can cure several diseases. The program will last for 5 days, and health workers will administer the drugs.

Sanitarian Taiwo Oladejo encouraged health workers to ensure the drugs reach every community, while Hon. Akande urged residents to inform others about the program.

Dignitaries present at the launch included Hon. Adewale Adelodun, leader of the house; Alhaji Bolaji Hazzan, chief of staff to the Chairman; and Alhaja Amudat Olatoyosi Salau, Head of Local Government administration.
